Over February half term we worked with 45 young people at Archbishop Sumner Primary school who gathered from the North Lambeth cluster of Primary and Secondary Schools for 4 days.  They chose to learn either Samba drumming, African drumming, Steel pan or Brass and together created a performance of 8 pieces of music which they shared with friends and family on Saturday 18th February.

The participants had a great time saying “I liked this course because I was with my friends and also I was playing music”, “I didn’t have to stay at home and do nothing because I got to come here and learn something new”, “I enjoyed the staff, the music, the different variety of instruments to play and when I get back to school I will be a whole lot better at playing the Cornet!”

The Tutors from Kinetika Bloco team were assisted by 5 young people from the Bloco Leadership Programme who helped to teach and mentor the participants and had a great time in the process.

“I am proud of my influence on the children. Whenever there was a problem, they came to me. I also took responsibility for a group I wasn’t prepared for and it turned out great”

“The highlight for me was realizing these kids look up to me. One said “sir I want to play and feel music like you do” that comment was a lot, but I replied “I’m teaching you to become better than me so one day you can do this!”
