Tomorrow will mark a year since we ran our first ever “We Are Bloco”, a fundraising concert held at Copeland Gallery in Peckham. It was an unforgettable night! Where incredible musicians, family and supporters all came together in aid of Kinetika Bloco and our dream to take some of our young musicians on the trip of a lifetime to New Orleans.
The evening started off with Youthsayers; a band formed by another incredible music organisation. They brought a chilled out vibe, featuring beautiful vocals from Akin Soul and a brass line up that included some of Kinetika Bloco’s very own upcoming talents such as Keahnne, Khush and Jaz.
Nicholai La Barrie, one of our board members, and his band Mangoseed, brought their unique high-energy sound to the night. Getting the crowd moving and warming everyone up for the rest of the night.
Bloco Super Band, made up of our wonderful tutors and alumni, Theon Cross, Sheila Maurice-Grey, Mark Kavuma and so many more. The band picked out the best from the Kinetika Bloco back catalogue. The set list featured “MRA” by Brotherhood of Breath, some Fela Kuti and our theme tune “Caravan” by Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol.
We can’t forget Brixton based Brasstermind, who ended the evening with a bang playing renditions of tunes including “Candy” and “Got To Be Real” which really got the crowd dancing. We hope to have you back sometime!
There will be another “We Are Bloco”, a chance for us to celebrate together once more. Until then, you can still support us by becoming a #BFF or donating to our Shutdown Sessions appeal.
Stay safe and keep an eye out tomorrow for some more reminders of the night.
