Kinetika Bloco @ the Elephant and Nun

It was a great day in South East London, as Southwark council together with local businesses, organisations and yes, Kinetika Bloco brought four parks alive with the sound of music, colour, dance, workshops, food and a procession. We, Kinetika Bloco, met early and even had enough time to grab something to eat from KFC before we set off to visit each park; Camberwell green, Lucas Gardens, Brunswick and then Peckham Sq and give a bright, bold and loud hello to everyone there.

I always look forward to summer school because there is nothing I’ve ever been to that is quite the same. Can you imagine 100+ young people put in a building with drums, instruments, choreographers and given two weeks to create a show that is completely unique and dynamic? Well, that’s what we do and we have a massive amount of fun on the way.  This year was great, we had new folks and our regulars returning and as usual the first day was fast and furious. We kicked off with introductions, games and then went straight into work.

Newham Carnival

Newham Carnival....what an interesting day!! Journeying from across the river in the "red chariots" in torrential rain to the far plains of…Newham, East London. Ok, so it wasn’t quite torrential rain but it was rainy and it was a long journey. We met up at Elephant and made our way by bus to Central Park School in Newham. When we finally made it to Newham, we walked to the school (no thanks to iPhone maps!!) and found our way in to begin our rehearsals.

So if you don’t know already: when our Musical Director, Mat Fox and Kinetika Artistic Director, Ali Pretty started the Kinetika Bloco movement they were inspired by the Brazilian samba bands. Having spent some time with Bloco's including Cortejo Afro (Bloco means block and is generally what you call a Brazilian samba band) of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, they were touched by the brilliant music, dance and spirit of celebration and community.

Streatham Carnival

Bloco leader Shayanna worked with a group of young people aged 7+, to create a walking band. The little guys and girls attended three workshops with our Bloco leader, donned some pretty impressive costumes and played there way down Streatham high street to Streatham Common in south London.
